Los Game Awards es una nueva encarnación de un evento anual que antes era patrocinado por una cadena de televisión norteamericana pero que en esta oportunidad buscó a los grandes de la industria para volverse una producción más sería, similar a los Oscares del cine. Esto a su vez implicó que solo se transmitió por Internet, pero el resultado es una mejora impresionante a eventos anteriores y tiene una buena proyección a futuro.

Los premios entregados cubrieron 16 categorías votadas por los especialistas en la materia, representantes de revistas y publicaciones web encargadas de probar y reseñar títulos de todas las consolas, pero también se crearon 5 galardones para ser votados por los jugadores en temas que hablan un poco más del favoritismo y donde la objetividad puede ser completamente ignorada.
